Social Distancing Devos: Colossians 2:13

Posted on May 11, 2020 by James Williams

Colossians 2:13:

And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses…

Before we were in Christ we were spiritually dead. This death was the result of our trespasses. The wages of sin is death and we are all guilty violators of the law. Ephesians 2 says that we were dead and therefore we followed the course of this world, the prince of the power of the air, and our own sinful desires. We were enslaved to our sin and unable to escape. We had not been united in Christ thus our sinful flesh was “uncircumcised.”

However, there is good news! Though you were dead, you (if you are in Christ) have been made alive! God has forgiven us ALL our trespasses! Notice who makes us alive..not us but God! John 1 teaches us that we receive Christ and are born “not of blood, nor the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God” (v. 13). From beginning to end, salvation is the work of God. He planned it, he accomplished it, and he is the one who secures it. When we take credit for the work of God we rob him of the glory due his name alone.

Application Questions:

  1. Do you see the destructive nature of sin that leads us to death? Do you believe you were dead until you were born again in Christ?
  2. Has God made you alive in Christ? Do you know what it’s like to have your transgression forgiven?
  3. What is the danger of giving man too much credit in salvation?
